Somewhere between those sleepy newborn days and the excitement of a first birthday is one of the sweetest—and most fleeting—stages of babyhood.

Around six to nine months, babies seem to change almost overnight. Suddenly, that tiny newborn is sitting up, reaching for their toes, giggling at familiar faces, and showing off a personality that feels bigger by the day. It’s a season filled with gummy smiles, belly laughs, curious expressions, and the sweetest little details you wish you could somehow bottle up and keep forever.

And that’s exactly why I love these six month milestone sessions so much.

Halfway to One

We photograph our babies when they’re brand new. We celebrate them again when they turn one. But somewhere in between is this wonderfully sweet stage that can so easily slip by unnoticed.

At six months, your baby is still very much a baby—but you’re beginning to catch glimpses of the little person they’re becoming.

They know your voice. They light up when you walk into the room. They have favorite songs and favorite toys. They may have a tiny tooth (or two!) peeking through when they smile. And they’ve discovered that their hands, feet, and toes are endlessly fascinating.

As a Lehigh Valley photographer, I find it to be such a joyful age to photograph.

Newborn sessions will always have a special place in my heart. There is nothing quite like documenting those first days—the tiny fingers, sleepy stretches, curled-up poses, and all the newness that comes with welcoming a baby into your family.

But 6 month sessions have a magic all their own.

By this stage, babies are interacting with the world around them. They're smiling back. They're curious. They're expressive. And because they can sit independently but usually aren't running away from us quite yet, we get this wonderful little window where we can capture so many different expressions and pieces of their personality.

Sometimes we get huge belly laughs.

Sometimes we get serious little stares.

Sometimes we get a perfectly timed pout.

And sometimes we get all three within about thirty seconds.

That's part of the fun.

When Should I Schedule?

Despite the nickname “Sitter Session,” there isn't one perfect age for these portraits.

Every baby develops on their own timeline.

For many babies, sitting happens somewhere between six and nine months, but sitting is not required for this milestone portrait session!
