On January 17, 2016, I was lucky enough to be invited to photograph the birth of baby Jackson. As a Birth Photographer, you're on call 24/7. When Mom gives you her due date, you cross out 3 weeks in your calendar (one week prior, the week of, and the week after) and do not book any other events, schedule vacations, or even weekend getaways. In addition, the volume on my phone was up - as in, all the way. I kept waking up during the nights leading up to his birth double and triple checking the volume on my phone. This was my first birth, and I was NOT going to miss it!
Baby Jackson was super happy in there and had no plans on coming out, so mama was scheduled to be induced; I got the message the next morning around 5:45 she was 5 cm dilated, which is when I aim to be present with Mom. I got to Lehigh Valley Hospital to photograph the birth around 6:30 am, and I ended up spending the next 8 hours of the day with this beautiful little family.
Dad was incredibly attentive to mom, wiping down her face with a cool washcloth, holding her hands, and being excellent moral support as she pushed. He was so concerned about her well being, and I noticed him watching the heart monitor making sure both Mama and Baby were healthy. Mom's mama was also there to be with her - she had awesome team mates!
Mom labored like a champion - in the end, Jackson wasn't moving down and she needed to have a quick C-Section. I wasn't permitted to go back into the OR with them, however on the way to the nursery, the nurse, Dad, and baby quickly stopped by the waiting room to allow Grandma and I to grab a few shots- and I mean QUICK. They were eager to get him up to the nursery to check him over where they discovered he was 9 pounds, 9 ounces and 21 3/4 long - and absolutely perfect. You can see in the images, Dad is over the moon in love with his new son.
Mom, Grandma and I waited in recovery until Dad brought baby Jackson down, and I was able to capture their first moments together as a family. It was incredibly moving, and I felt so privileged to be able to be invited to capture these moments.
Thank you, sweet family, for allowing me to be part of your special day. Birth sessions can be so incredibly special and magical - they're about capturing the moments you want to remember forever - the look on Dad's face, to remember the way Mom felt when she held baby for the first time. And really, allowing Dad and other family to put the camera down and be present in the moment. And what a moment it is!!! <3
